President of CUPE Local 2190, Nancy Simone joined other CUPE Locals to support striking CUPE Local 1764 at a rally held outside The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters on Wednesday, July 2, 2014.
CUPE Ontario banners flew high with loud cheers and applause from members of various CUPE Locals as CUPE National President Paul Moist joined the demonstration to stand with 1764 in their fight against Durham Region.
“To the members of 1764, we are proud to represent you,” said Moist. “We know it’s difficult to be on the picket line – so keep standing together and say No to Concessions to Durham Region.”
Moist also said that everyone’s support makes a difference.
“With different trade unionists standing with Local 1764, it sends back a strong message to Durham Region,” he said. “The reason we belong to a National Union is two-fold: Number one, public employees want a voice at the bargaining table and number two, we pull our resources together – all of which are focused on Durham Region and because of this, we will last one day longer against our employers.”
Amongst other guests present at the picket line to support the local were CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn, CUPE Ontario Secretary Treasurer Candace Rennick, Durham Region Labour Council President Jim Freeman and Socialist hip-hop artist, Mohammad Ali.
